Post-op Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Recovering from surgery can often involve swelling, fluid retention and discomfort. Post-operative Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, specialised massage technique designed to encourage lymphatic flow, help reduce swelling and support your body's natural recovery process. At Scar Therapy Brentwood in Essex, I provide personalised post-surgery lymphatic drainage treatments to help ease discomfort and promote a smoother, more comfortable recovery.

What is Post-op Manual Lymphatic Drainage?
The lymphatic system is the body's natural filtration system, crucial for maintaining overall health. It transports waste products, excess fluid, toxins, and pathogens from tissues toward the lymph nodes, where they are filtered and cleansed before being reintroduced into the bloodstream or excreted. Closely linked to immune function, the lymphatic system produces white blood cells in the lymph nodes. These cells act as the body's natural defenders, identifying and neutralising bacteria, toxins, and other harmful pathogens to fight infection and disease. Swelling and inflammation are common after surgery and play a vital role in the healing process. However, when inflammation persists too long, proteins like fibrin (which helps close wounds) may not dissolve as quickly, leading to excess collagen buildup and the formation of adhesions. This can cause the lymphatic system to become sluggish and congested, slowing recovery. Using specialised techniques such as Fluoroscopy-Guided Manual Lymph Drainage (FG-MLD) – the Fill & Flush method – and Brazilian Manual Lymph Drainage (BMLD), we employ gentle, rhythmic strokes in a specific sequence along lymphatic pathways to clear blockages and activate lymphatic vessels. This optimises the drainage of toxins, pathogens, and excess fluid, reducing swelling, enhancing immune function, and accelerating recovery. In addition to hands on therapy, devices such as the LymphaTouch or Deep Oscillation Therapy, may be used to enhance treatments. Following surgery you may be advised to have a course of MLD treatments and wear compression garments to get the best possible outcome. Advice can be given as to where to seek the most appropriate garment. In between treatments, you will be encouraged to manage your progress with the aid of body brushing, special balls and exercises given during the treatment.

How does it work?
By using specialised FG-MLD and Brazilian MLD practices we are able to address the associated issues relating to post-op lymphoedema. It is recommended that a course of treatments in close succession is needed for optimal results. These can begin from as quickly as 3-7 days post-surgery, initially spaced approximately 3 days apart before progressing to longer durations between treatments. Up to 6-8 sessions may be necessary. Please note that we never encourage fluid to exit a wound site. This pain-free approach offers a range of benefits, including:
-
Improved Immune System: Effectively removing debris, waste products, toxins, and pathogens from the body.
-
Reduction in Fluid Retention and Bloating: By manually stimulating the opening of lymphatic vessels, reducing swelling and discomfort.
-
Revitalized Sense of Self: Alleviating sluggishness and helping you feel more energized.
-
Better Uptake of Medication: Clearing blockages and stimulating white blood cell production, improving the effectiveness of treatment.
-
Enhanced Movement: Reducing swelling around joints, making it easier to move and increasing flexibility.
-
Shorter Recovery Times: With enhanced immune function, improved mobility, and more efficient medication absorption, recovery is quicker and more effective.
Pricing and Packages
Generally, more than one treatment is required to get the desired results. However, it is hard to say exactly how many you may need. The quantity and frequency of treatments depend on a number of factors, such as the age of the scar and other issues it is causing. With this in mind, as well as “pay as you go”, two other packages are available, both offering great value for money. All treatments last one hour.

Before and After Transformations

Post-Op Lymphatic Drainage
This is before and after just 1 treatment, we were able to disburse excess lymphatic build up to clear pathways. Making it much more comfortable for the client.

C-Section Transformation over 1 month
Before and After just 1 treatment. My client didn't realise how distended her body was. This was a build-up of fluid that was unable to drain due to scar tissue from her Caesarean delivery. We used a combination of Post Op MLD techniques, to drain away to alternative lymph nodes, with Scar Therapy to soften the scar, thus enhancing fluid dynamics.
